Chapter 8

Some Pharisees and scholars had recently returned from Jerusalem, and they were feeling particularly holy. They noticed my disciples were eating bread without first washing their hands. The Pharisees and scholars came up to me and asked, “Why do you disciples not walk in accordance with tradition, but eat their bread with unclean hands?”

I replied to them, “Isaiah was right about you, when he said, ‘These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain. They substitute human traditions for divine commands.’ You are experts in finding loopholes in the Law. You devise ways to negate the spirit of God’s commands in order to obey the letter of the law. Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who speaks ill of father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you allow a person to dishonor his mother and father by declaring his possessions as “Corban” - dedicated to God - so he no longer has to aid his elderly parents. You disobey the Word of God for personal gain! You do many other things like this.”

I addressed the crowd and said, “Listen and understand. Nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. What goes into the mouth does not defile. What comes out of the mouth defiles."

Later when I was alone with my disciples, they asked me the meaning of my words. I was frustrated and said, “Are you as unhearing as the Pharisees? Can’t you see that food goes into the stomach, through the intestines and out of the body? Food does not touch the heart or defile it. All foods are clean. What comes out of the heart of a person – that is what defiles a person! Out of the heart flows evil thoughts and actions. These defile a person. Holiness is not about food or tradition. It is about a pure heart.”

After this I left Galilee and journeyed to the region of Tyre. I was welcomed into a Jewish home, and I insisted that no one else in the area know that I was there. Yet word got around. A Syrophoenician woman came and fell at my feet. She told me that her young daughter had an unclean spirit, and asked that I come and heal her. I repeatedly told her, “No,” but she would not take “No” for an answer. I told her that I came for Israel, not Gentiles. I explained, “I must feed the children of Israel first. It is not right to take the children’s food and give it to dogs.” She replied, “Yes, Lord, but even dogs eat crumbs that fall from the children’s table.” I saw that she was a person of great faith. I knew at that moment that my ministry had expanded beyond the Jews. The Father had spoken to me through her. I told her, “Your daughter is whole.” She returned to her home and found her daughter completely healed.
